As a creative entrepreneur, the holiday season can feel like a double-edged sword. It can be so hard to find balance. It’s the time of year when you want to soak up every cozy moment, yet your business to-do list never seems to take a holiday. I’ve been there—stuck between finishing client projects, planning for the new year, and trying to squeeze in family time without feeling like I’m constantly on call.
At Kemotion, we know firsthand how challenging it can be to juggle work and life during the holiday season. That’s why we’ve put together practical tips to help you maintain balance, stay productive, and actually enjoy the holidays this year.
As a creative studio that works closely with travel and hospitality brands, our team has navigated many busy holiday seasons. We’ve learned a thing or two about managing workloads without sacrificing quality time with loved ones.
This blog post is about “Finding Work-Life Balance During the Holidays While Working From Home.”
One December, I found myself overcommitted, saying “yes” to every opportunity that came my way. By the time Christmas rolled around, I was burned out and barely present with my family. That was the year I learned the importance of setting boundaries.
At the start of the season, list your non-negotiables—whether it’s attending your child’s recital, launching a holiday product, or taking a weekend off. Then, block those priorities in your calendar. Once they’re set, protect them fiercely.
Last year, I made Tuesdays my “deep work days” and declined all calls. That single boundary gave me the focus to finish projects early and spend guilt-free evenings with loved ones.
A few holidays ago, I spent more time answering emails and organizing files than creating or connecting with clients. It felt like my creativity was being drained by admin work. That’s when I realized I needed systems.
Identify tasks you can automate or delegate. Use tools like Flodesk for email campaigns, ClickUp or Notion for task management, and HoneyBook for client onboarding. If you’re still manually tracking invoices or following up on emails, now’s the time to let technology do the heavy lifting.
That’s why having Julie as our project manager has been such a game-changer. It’s not just about freeing up hours—it’s about collaboration. While one of us dives into the creative side, designing holiday-inspired templates, the other ensures seamless communication with clients, keeping everything running smoothly.
As a creative entrepreneur, no two days are ever the same—especially during the holidays. One year, I didn’t plan my week while on vacation, only to have a client request a last-minute revision, and my family spring a surprise dinner on me. I learned that sometimes, you have to go with the flow.
Build buffer time into your schedule and leave room for spontaneity. If a client needs a quick turnaround or you get invited to an impromptu holiday event, you’ll feel less stressed knowing you have the flexibility to adjust.
These days, I take walking meetings during calls. It’s a great way to get fresh air and reflect on creative ideas while still staying connected. Bonus: it’s helped me move my body during a season that’s otherwise sedentary.
I’ll never forget the year I almost missed my family’s Secret Santa exchange because I was glued to my laptop finishing edits for a client. That experience taught me that moments with loved ones are just as important as meeting deadlines.
Set work hours that allow you to be fully present with the people you care about. Create a clear “shut-off” time for your workday and stick to it.
We love to schedule a dinner or happy hour with the team to the calendar. Not only does it bring us closer outside of working together, but it also gives me a break to laugh and recharge during a hectic season.
As creatives, we pour so much of ourselves into our work. During the holidays, it’s easy to forget to pour back into ourselves. I learned this lesson the hard way one year when I caught the flu right before New Year’s Eve because I was so run-down.
Self-care doesn’t have to be elaborate. Start your mornings with a ritual that fuels you—a cup of tea, and a few minutes of journaling. Find what centers you and make it a priority.
One of my favorite holiday rituals is taking a nighttime drive to see Christmas lights with my favorite playlist in the background. It’s a simple way to feel inspired and grounded amidst the holiday rush.
The beauty of being a creative entrepreneur is that you have the power to design a life that aligns with your values—even during the holidays. It’s not about doing it all; it’s about doing what matters most to you.
This season, I hope you give yourself the permission to prioritize, streamline, and savor the moments that make the holidays meaningful. How do you find balance as a creative entrepreneur during the holidays? Share your favorite tips or traditions in the comments—I’d love to hear them!
